Earth of Honolulu, examines the APOE gene. One version is associated with an
increased risk of Alzheimerfs." US News & World Report /

"What you couldn't know until now is whether you also have a combination
of gene variations that allow you to dine out or smoke with impunity."
"I'm
also a bit unlucky in having a gene variation called ApoE4 that increases my
chance of developing Alzheimer's by 400 per cent compared with the average
person.
"It could have been worse, though. Every gene comes in two halves,
one half from your mother, one from your father. If both halves of that
gene had been ApoE4s, my Alzheimer's risk would have gone up ten times.
'The ApoE4 variation does put you at a bit of an increased risk for heart
disease as well,' says Dr Jenkins carefully. 'That's because it affects
the way cholesterol is handled."
Dr Jenkins, a consultant physician at St Bartholomew's Hospital,
London, is one of the expert medical advisers.

Alzheimer's Disease risk
|
A genetic test is now available to accurately evaluate your risk for Alzheimer's Disease and Atherosclerosis.
All that is required is a saliva sample collected on filter paper.
This test for Apolipoprotein (E) Genome needs to be done only once in a
lifetime. |

| Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays an important role in the metabolism and redistribution
of lipoproteins and cholesterol. |
|
| ApoE plays a major role in detoxifying HNE and the neuroprotective effects
of its isoforms may help explain the relationship between apoE genotype
and the susceptibility to neurodegenerative diseases. |
|
| When you receive the kit, mail in your specimen. After your specimen is received please expect 3-4 weeks for completion. |
Increasing evidence indicates that there are hormonal reductions of estrogen
and androgen levels in aged men and women. These hormonal reductions might
be risk factors for cognitive impairments and the development of Alzheimer's
disease (AD) and Atherosclerosis. Studies have revealed that aged people
show improved cognition after treatments with sex steroids. Therefore,
ongoing clinical AD trials have been designed to evaluate the potential
benefits of estrogen therapy in women and testosterone therapy in men. Apolipoprotein E (apoE) plays an important role in the metabolism and redistribution
of lipoproteins and cholesterol.
Data published in the Journal of Neurochemistry refers to Apolipoprotein E as having a mechanism for neuroprotective effects. This data suggests that apoE plays three important roles in detoxifying a lipid (fat) peroxidation product called HNE or 4-Hydroxynonenal which has been found to covalently bind to proteins on cysteine residues in the spinal cords of people with ALS
The three major human apoE isoforms, apoE2, apoE3, and apoE4, differ in their effects on AD and Atherosclerosis risk and pathology.
Our ApoE genome test looks at the combination of E2/E3/E4 isoforms expressed in an individual's DNA. The following interpretations are revealed and included with each of these saliva tests. This test needs to be done only once in a lifetime.
 |
E2/E2 - Best protection from Alzheimer's Disease. Moderately severe risk for Atherosclerosis. |
 |
E2/E3 - Risk for Atherosclerosis but moderately low risk for Alzheimer's Disease. |
 |
E2/E4 - Intermediate protection from Alzheimer's Disease, however
elevated risk for Atherosclerosis. |
 |
E3/E3 - Normal type (moderate protection from both Alzheimer's
Disease and Atherosclerosis). |
 |
E3/E4 -
Increased risk for Alzheimer's Disease. |
 |
E4/E4 -
Severe risk for Alzheimer's Disease. |
